Hope and Healing 80x40 Watercolor on panel UVLS varnish

Abstract to a degree at times, my themes stem directly from nature. Growth, Resilience, Strength and Balance are but a few. I embrace those attributes through arching strokes, a respect for value and sense of place along with a dash of chaos thrown in for good measure.

My early training focused on life studies and painting techniques that accompanied its particular discipline. It set a structure that still guides much of my work today. As my career evolved, I began to embrace an approach that required the use of various substrates and larger surfaces while still maintaining an archival standard. Aquabord, canvas and paper comprise the bulk of my work, each having its own qualities for the work at hand. Over the past few years I’ve also integrated my design aesthetics into my fine art through different series printed as archival giclees and on various other substrates.

As I discover and define the negative space in my work, it reminds me of an early lesson. “We are defined by that which is around us. Always be respectful of that space.” - Michael
